THE FOUR SAGES

This is a very very old story. It is a myth: it is a story told all over the world in many versions. This particular version of the story is told by Rabbis, Sages, Yogi, gurus, scholars, Elders or any other kind of men who have spent their lives in learning. Anyway, there are four of them. I will choose Sages of Great Learning to illustrate this story. Learning is a great gift we give ourselves and this gift is turned inside out and always serves.

Once upon a time, which was actually no time at all; there were four Sages of Great Learning. In the darkest time of night, just before dawn, while the Sages slept, the Gods, as they often do, sent a messenger to gather the Sages and raise them up to witness the Great Oracle. There, with esoteric eyes, they each beheld the Great Mystery. And, with ears that are not ears, they each heard that which cannot be heard.

Somewhere in the descent to the earthly world of flesh one Sage, having seen such greatness, lost his mind because he was not ready within the Self to receive this Gift.

He spent the rest of his days waving his arms in the air, banging his ears to silence the voices, staring at people with the want to understand and gathering things cast off by others in a shopping cart in an attempt to fill that which cannot be filled. He just could make no sense, find fulfillment nor could he find peace.

The second Sage was cynical. He believed none of what he saw and dismissed it as just a dream for my mind’s amusement. “A product of a disturbed digestion,” he grumbled, “just a bit of underdone potato” carelessly chewed in the evening meal. The second Sage lived a life of further study, not quite understanding what he read and learned.

The third Sage was swallowed by his Hubris. This Sage felt he was the Chosen One called to witness the Great Mystery. He awoke with the knowledge that somehow he was better, more special, than any other man past, present or future.

The third Sage went on and on, lecturing about what he saw and what it meant, gathering great wealth from people who honoured him, thinking he was the path to follow’ because they could not see this path within themselves. But there are no words for what he witnessed, so he made up his own words and meaning. Because of this, he betrayed his faith, himself, and all who believed his words.

The fourth Sage was humbled by what he saw. He saw all things in the Godhead but also saw nothing at all. His place in the Universe and the place of the Universe within him fell open. He took his understanding to his life and created art of great beauty and sharing in every act. And he became better than he ever was.
